“It’s Spring. Why Aren’t My Plants Greening Up?”
April 9th, 2025
Some plants emerge later than others in the spring
Like teenagers on a Saturday morning, some plants are slow to rise in the spring.
With new growth all around us, it’s easy to forget that plants have different timelines! If your plants aren’t leafing out yet, they may need consistently warmer temperatures to emerge from dormancy.
Here are examples of grasses, shrubs and perennials that typically green up later in the spring:
- Warm season turf grasses like DOG TUFF™ grass
- Warm season ornamental grasses like Blonde Ambition blue grama, Standing Ovation little bluestem and giant sacaton (the majority of Plant Select ornamental grasses are warm season grasses that thrive in the summer heat)
- Dwarf leadplant
- Western salvias like Wild Thing sage, Furman’s Red sage and VERMILION BLUFFS® Mexican sage
- Gold on Blue prairie zinnia
Give these plants more time to emerge from dormancy. It’s worth the wait.

Tip! You can always plant spring bulbs around these late risers for spring interest.
