“If a Plant Is Branded, Does That Mean It’s Hybridized?”

March 10th, 2026

For Plant Select plants, the short answer is no.

A better answer is: It depends on the plant.

Many of Plant Select’s branded plants have been selected from wild populations of plants for unique, naturally-occurring characteristics. And yes, many of these plants are grown from seed.

RAMBLER™ mountain fleabane (Erigeron formosissimus ‘P022S’) is a great example of a branded plant that is not a hybrid.

Mike Kintgen, curator of alpine collections at Denver Botanic Gardens, collected its seed from a wild population of Erigeron formosissimus. He was drawn to its abundant flowers, short stature and ability to grow at high elevations.

During Plant Select’s multi-year plant trials, we discovered it thrived at lower elevations too (5400 feet).

Plus, it’s well behaved, and it’s very attractive to native bees.

RAMBLER™ mountain fleabane can be grown from seed or a cutting.

We know there’s a misconception that all branded plants are hybridized, but it’s a much more nuanced topic.

Be careful of misinformation that can come from broad generalizations.
