UNFORGETTABLETM hummingbird trumpet steals the autumn show
UNFORGETTABLETM hummingbird trumpet takes late-season bloom to another level. This extra hardy selection (to -32F at least) of the western native plant group formerly known as Zauschneria, now Epilobium, comes from Lauren Springer, a northern Colorado plantswoman.
It grows boldly upright with a different look than its low-growing cousin ORANGE CARPETTM hummingbird trumpet. Come late summer, its pale sage-green foliage disappears beneath an explosion of long trumpet-shaped orange-red flowers for many weeks until frost, nourishing hummingbirds for their strenuous migration south.
This vigorous hardy perennial roots easily and has tidy, symmetrical foliage. Unlike some of its relatives, it fills a nursery pot quickly and presentably, even when it isn’t in bloom.
In the landscape, UNFORGETTABLETM resists browsing by deer and rabbits, and performs best in sunny sites, thriving in most soils including clay. Extra heat during the growing season encourages more bloom: south- or west-facing placement or planting near hardscape brings out the plants’ best.
Thanks to Lauren Springer for her insights into this plant’s attributes.
